Guidelines on Privacy and Security in Public Cloud Computing (NIST Special Publication 800 144) provides an introduction to the privacy and security challenges facing companies that make use of public cloud computing, and presents a series of recommendations that companies should consider when outsourcing infrastructure, software and data to a public cloud. The publication explains the difference between a service provider's cloud and a third party's cloud, and outlines the key differences between cloud computing and SaaS or Software as a Service (SaaS). It also discusses potential threats to confidentiality of information stored in clouds, and lists potential solutions to protect confidential information from Cloud hackers. It concludes by briefly examining issues surrounding cost and management, and recommending four guidelines for managing cloud assets. Guidelines on Privacy and Security in Public Cloud Computing NIST 800 144 highlights the need for companies to manage their information assurance capabilities in tandem with their other business goals. This includes ensuring that "cloud" sites and applications are safe from outside influences, and that company information is protected at all times. These guidelines describe four main frameworks used to achieve this. They include Controls, Enforced Licensing, Identification and Protection, and Management Information Assurance (MIPA). The NIST guidelines on privacy and security in public cloud computing services provide guidance on how to choose the correct choice. First, a company must determine whether it needs its information to be protected against external threats. Second, the company must establish what type of protection best fits its own needs. Third, the company must establish controls that can be applied to restrict access to its information. Fourth, the cloud provider must implement measures that help it monitor activity that attempts to breach security. The guidelines also provide detailed recommendations for choosing a cloud provider. When making your selection, you will want to consider the steps that a provider takes to protect confidential information. You will also want to consider how the provider safeguards against unauthorized access. If a provider does not have strong guidelines in place for both situations, then it is not likely that you will have confidence in their handling of sensitive information. The NIST guidelines on information security in public cloud computing services follow a logical approach. First, the cloud service must ensure that it is offering adequate levels of security. The providers will need controls to monitor and report security incidents. The second step requires a cloud service to go through a review process when it determines whether or not to provide access to certain information. The guidelines identify six key points that cloud computing service providers should take into consideration. First, these guidelines suggest that cloud services offer "asymmetric protection." This means that a service may provide strong protections for some categories of information, but fail at the same time to adequately guard others. For example, while a data center can be effectively protected using a multi-layered physical security system, it may not be able to protect confidential information stored off site. Second, the guidelines advise cloud service providers on how they can address operational resilience. Operational resilience is the ability of a cloud service provider's servers and applications to withstand sudden spikes in traffic as well as extreme weather conditions. The guidelines note that a company may incur temporary spikes in its monthly traffic no matter how carefully it plans its infrastructure. If it cannot anticipate extreme weather events, it will suffer from increased downtime. Finally, the guidelines advise cloud computing companies on how they should move forward in securing their networks. In particular, a company needs to determine what its highest level of risk is. Depending on this figure, the cloud provider can determine what measures it should take to lower that risk. In many cases, the guideline encourages the cloud provider to use intrusion detection and prevention software to detect malicious attacks. However, if the software can't identify an attack right away, the cloud provider should still try to find out what it is. When it has determined what the attack is, the cloud provider can implement measures designed to mitigate the risk to its customers. |
